Gator Me Crazy

(819 Decatur; old Cafe Beignet location)

REVIEWS:

Best gator in town. Most recent visit during Jan 2010. Plan to visit again this year in Feb 2011. Good tip to know is that they do not serve alcohol but if you would like a drink or beer you can walk to bar next door and bring it back and enjoy it with your meal or snacks. Family friendly and excellent service. Cincinnati,Oh

We were in Gator Me Crazy over New Year’s Weekend. We had the cajun donuts and they are fantastic. The best we have ever had, including Cafe Du Monde. We went three times in three days! The donuts may not appear on the menu, but ask for them!

This is the best gator food you will find in New Orleans. They have grilled alligator on a stick! My favorite! Don’t miss this place. YOu will want to keep coming back. Prices are reasonable, and the staff and owners are very friendly. Can’t wait to go back!!!

I know locals don’t eat alligator. That’s like me going to China to eat a fortune cookie.

But I liked this place because it has character. And it had character because it has friendly employees, large foam cups (they were supposed to be “smalls” or “regular” sized), a video for a tacky cemetery tour playing in the background, and an actual tour information booth IN the restaurant, at the food counter. Doesn’t get much more touristy than that!

I wouldn’t get too excited about alligator – it doesn’t taste like anything spectacular though it does taste good. (I guess I thought it might be similar to eating unicorn meat) It has a chewier consistency than chicken but is more lean. All in all, I really enjoyed my po’boy.

I also liked their red soda which tasted like a stick of Big Red gum in carbonated, beverage form. It was yummy.

So, come here if you want the ultimate, unashamedly tourist experience

Man. I have been down around the French Quarter several times now and this, by far, has been my favorite little spot to get something to eat. I had the Alligator Po’ boy. I am still craving it. Sooo good and great sauce.
Will definitely go back next time I’m down there.

My wife and I ate here during Jazz Fest (5/2010) and couldn’t have been more impressed.  The owners although busy, still took the time to talk to us and show us great hospitality.  Opened in October of 2009.  They were spotlighted on Food Network for their rolls; I actually liked the Crawfish Roll better than the Gator Roll.  You NEED to try the Grilled Gator on a Stick – they marinate it for 24 hours and then serve perfectly cooked.  Awesome.  Get here before they get too popular and raise their prices!

You’d think it would be a bit easier to find anything beyond alligator po’ boys or appetizers in New Orleans. Maybe you need to go deeper into the swamp to find that. Gator Me Crazy has a pretty big selection of gator items. I had the grilled gator piquant and the gator swamp roll. Both were good – the gator swamp roll surprisingly so. Kind of like an eggroll, but also a bit like a large well made gator pizza roll.
