The Abita Brewing Company is a craft brewery located in Abita Springs, Louisiana, 30 miles north of New Orleans. They first began brewing beer in 1986. That year, the company produced 1,500 barrels of beer. Today, they brew over 80,000 barrels of beer annually and 5,000 barrels of root beer annually.[6] [7]

Abita Golden, Abita Amber, Abita Purple Haze, and Abita Turbodog are sold in various markets across the United States and Puerto Rico. Abita Brewing Company is the 17th largest Craft Brewery and the 31st largest brewery of any category in the United States ranked by volume sold in 2007.[8]

The company brews its beer with water from artesian wells in Abita Springs. They produce several types of beer year round, and also produce a series of seasonal beers. In August 2005, Stuff Magazine named Abita’s Turbodog Ale as the best beer made in America.[9] The Abita Brew Pub, under independent ownership, is located at the original brewery location in Abita Springs and features Abita beers, with some brews exclusive to the brew pub, under a close partnership with the brewery.[3][4]

The company also produces Abita root beer which is unusual in that it’s made with Louisiana sugarcane rather than high-fructose corn syrup.

Dinner destinations

Hi Nola fans!

Was working on my itinerary and noticed that I don’t have a dinner reservation (or idea) for our last night in Nola – eeek!

Staying at a B&B, so breakfast doesn’t enter into the equation.

Looking for something not as expensive as Stella! but still special as it’s our last night in town. In the FQ preferably.

Here is our food agenda so far — doing other activities, but this question is only about food, glorious food 😉

Saturday

arrive at 3:30pm

dinner reservation at NOLA Restaurant, chef’s counter

cafe du monde – late night snack

Sunday

Jazz brunch – Mr. B’s Bistro

Mid-day break – El Gato Negro for margaritas

Dinner – Yo Mamma for pb/bacon burgers

Monday

Lunch at Oak Alley (touring swamp and plantations before), open for better ideas on this

Cochon or Cochon Butcher for dinner

Camellia Grill for dessert – pecan pie!

Tuesday

Early lunch – Commander’s Palace

mid-day snack – chargrilled oysters

Dinner???

Wednesday

lunch – Central Grocery Muffalettas

+ cafe du monde beignets

depart 🙁

yum…now I’m salivating! I definitely want to spend Sunday afternoon with you! 🙂 Have you thought about Irene’s? Same block as Stella!, higher end, but affordable, amazing food, amazing service (also Brad and Angelina’s fave restaurant…altho I’m so lame, I wouldn’t know them if I sat next to them!) I’d skip lunch at Oak Alley. I haven’t tried it, but it seemed more “cafeteria” and I waited toget back to the Quarter to eat! Maybe have a nice breakfast at The Old Coffee Pot…they make incredible EVERYTHING!!!!

Try Verti Marte for an “all that Jazz” with wow sauce!!! Incredible and inexpensive. They just re-opened after the fire and I can’t wait to get in there again! They even deliver!!!

I would go to Galatoire’s Tuesday night. In fact I would not visit NOLA without dining at Galatoire’s. My next suggestion would be Bayona. I would swap Emeril’s for NOLA. They are both very nice but I prefer Emeril’s. Go early and have drinks at the bar. Or stop at Lucy’s Bar on Tchoupitoulas just before you get to Emeril’s for their 4/7 PM happy hour.

Galatoire’s is classic creole cuisine including a lot of seafood dishes like grilled fresh fish with crabmeat, several oyster dishes, shrimp, crab et al. It’s my favorite NOLA restaurants. Their lamb chops are outstanding also. NOLA and Emeril’s will have high quality entrees that include NOLA seafood but a lot of lamb, veal, chicken and steaks also. You should go to Galatoire’s once in your life.

Gator Me Crazy

(819 Decatur; old Cafe Beignet location)

REVIEWS:

Best gator in town. Most recent visit during Jan 2010. Plan to visit again this year in Feb 2011. Good tip to know is that they do not serve alcohol but if you would like a drink or beer you can walk to bar next door and bring it back and enjoy it with your meal or snacks. Family friendly and excellent service. Cincinnati,Oh

We were in Gator Me Crazy over New Year’s Weekend. We had the cajun donuts and they are fantastic. The best we have ever had, including Cafe Du Monde. We went three times in three days! The donuts may not appear on the menu, but ask for them!

This is the best gator food you will find in New Orleans. They have grilled alligator on a stick! My favorite! Don’t miss this place. YOu will want to keep coming back. Prices are reasonable, and the staff and owners are very friendly. Can’t wait to go back!!!

I know locals don’t eat alligator. That’s like me going to China to eat a fortune cookie.

But I liked this place because it has character. And it had character because it has friendly employees, large foam cups (they were supposed to be “smalls” or “regular” sized), a video for a tacky cemetery tour playing in the background, and an actual tour information booth IN the restaurant, at the food counter. Doesn’t get much more touristy than that!

I wouldn’t get too excited about alligator – it doesn’t taste like anything spectacular though it does taste good. (I guess I thought it might be similar to eating unicorn meat) It has a chewier consistency than chicken but is more lean. All in all, I really enjoyed my po’boy.

I also liked their red soda which tasted like a stick of Big Red gum in carbonated, beverage form. It was yummy.

So, come here if you want the ultimate, unashamedly tourist experience

Man. I have been down around the French Quarter several times now and this, by far, has been my favorite little spot to get something to eat. I had the Alligator Po’ boy. I am still craving it. Sooo good and great sauce.
Will definitely go back next time I’m down there.

My wife and I ate here during Jazz Fest (5/2010) and couldn’t have been more impressed.  The owners although busy, still took the time to talk to us and show us great hospitality.  Opened in October of 2009.  They were spotlighted on Food Network for their rolls; I actually liked the Crawfish Roll better than the Gator Roll.  You NEED to try the Grilled Gator on a Stick – they marinate it for 24 hours and then serve perfectly cooked.  Awesome.  Get here before they get too popular and raise their prices!

You’d think it would be a bit easier to find anything beyond alligator po’ boys or appetizers in New Orleans. Maybe you need to go deeper into the swamp to find that. Gator Me Crazy has a pretty big selection of gator items. I had the grilled gator piquant and the gator swamp roll. Both were good – the gator swamp roll surprisingly so. Kind of like an eggroll, but also a bit like a large well made gator pizza roll.

Street Cam Fun

I just found this Earth Cam, street view from The Cat’s Meow at the corner or Bourbon St and St Peter St.

earthcam.com/usa/…

Wouldn’t it be cool to be there at a pre-arranged time and wave to family and friends back home?

We did the same thing, with son at home on computer as we stood in front of the Tropical Isle Webcam corner of Bourbon & Orleans. Here is a link to that camera. FYI, it refreshes every couple of minutes.

http://tropicalisle.com/webcam.html

Note to self: Tropical Isle has a great drink called Hand Grenade.

And I should have mentioned that Muriel’s Restaurant has a wonderful cam on Jackson Square – when it’s working, that is…    http://www.nola.com/jacksonsquarecam/

We have a great shot from there of Bill and I holding a sign that says,  Hi Kids! Send money!

I’ve done this with the Jackson Square webcam on nola.com. One time, I have my friend look on there at a given time and she saw us. Another time, I was there and called my daughter at college and she saw my husband and I as we talked on the phone. She was able to save the picture for us. It’s a lot of fun.
